Thank you for your interest in a Program Support Assistant position with the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System. Please respond to the questions below.

1. Select the one statement that best describes the education and/or experience that you possess that demonstrates your ability to perform Program Support Assistant work at the GS-05 level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service.

A. I have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience which equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform successfully the duties of the Program Support Assistant, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position. Examples of specialized experience include: performing standard clerical assignments and resolving recurring problems. Work consists of related steps, processes, or methods which require the employee to identify and recognize differences among a variety of recurring situations. Actions to be taken or responses to be made differ in nature and sequence because of differences in the particular characteristics of each case or transaction. In addition to knowledge of how to carry out procedures, the work requires some subject-matter knowledge of VA programs and operations. These knowledges are needed to determine what is being done, why the action is being taken, and how it must be accomplished.

B. I have a 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours (Transcripts must be submitted). This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.

C. I have a combination of education and experience to qualify at the GS-05 level. This can be determined by adding total qualifying experience as a percentage of the required experience and education as a percentage of the total required. The total percentage must equal 100 percent. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. For example, the position to be filled is an Program Support Assistant, GS-5. You have 9 months of specialized experience and 75 semester hours of college (15 semester hours beyond the second year and the equivalent of 3 months of specialized experience). You meet 75 percent of the required experience and 25 percent of the required education. You meet 100 percent of the requirement for 1 year of specialized experience and are qualified for the position.
