6. Physicians in the VHA are required to possess a degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The institution must have been accredited by Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) the year in which the degree was granted. If you are a foreign graduate you must possess an Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate. A copy of the ECFMG must be provided with this application. 7. Physician in the VHA must have completed a first-year residency, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which it was completed. For a VA resident, the appropriate Deans Committee and Resident Review Board may recommend appointment based on the candidate's acceptability for residency training.
