Examines each animal daily for health conditions.

Observes and recognizes animal appearance or health abnormalities, and reports these to a supervisor or animal health technician.

Administers prophylactic treatment and simple medications to animals, including injections of antibiotics, anesthetics, analgesics,etc. as directed by the supervisor.

Assists the supervisor, animal health technician, and/or the animal caretaker lead in receiving and processing newly arrived animals.

Removes all deceased laboratory animals to the necropsy suite.

Collects biological specimens (feces, urine, blood, and microbiological specimens) for clinical laboratory examination as directed by the supervisor.
8.
Checks and maintains the animal and cage identification system as directed by the supervisor.
9.
Euthanizes animals using prescribed methods, when so directed by the supervisor.
10.
Provides food, water, and cage care to the animals under the incumbent's responsibility.
11.
Cleans, sanitizes, and sometimes sterilizes by prescribed methods the animal enclosures and feeding and watering equipment, as well as the animal rooms themselves.
12.
Disposes of animal waste and bedding material according to established procedures.
13.
Operates equipment used to clean and sterilize animal cages, cage racks, water bottles, and sipper tubes.
14.
Maintains complete and accurate records of all job-related activities.
15.
Serves as acting-lead in the absence of the animal health technician leads.
16.
Teaches animal-care techniques to new or junior animal caretakers.
