This announcement is to fill Archeological Technician positions in the excepted service under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) hiring authority, Public Law 96-487 and 16 U.S.C. 3198. Eligibility for the position under this hiring authority is determined by your knowledge of natural and cultural resources in the local area.
You must have lived or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of the Chugach National Forest or Tongass National Forest and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the cultural and/or natural resources of this area to apply.

You must possess knowledge or expertise of the Chugach National Forest or Tongass National Forest area to participate in local cultural resource management activities. Your responses to the following questions will be used to determine your eligibility for all positions filled through this announcement. Have you lived or worked in the geographic boundaries of the Chugach National Forest in Southcentral, Alaska or Tongass National Forest in Southeast, Alaska?

If you answered yes to the question above, you must provide the name of the city along with month and year of start and end dates of each period you lived in that city. If you lived in multiple cities, list start and date periods separately and indicate which city you lived in for each period listed.

Tell us about your experience hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, or participating in other activities on public lands in Southcentral or Southeast Alaska. Provide details about the activities you participated in and where they occurred.

Tell us about your experience participating in subsistence gathering, hunting, and/or fishing or other customary and traditional uses/cultural resource activities you have participated in on public lands of Southcentral or Southeast Alaska. Provide details about the activities you participated in and general area where they occurred.

What knowledge do you have of bear habitat/behavior in the area and how you recreate or work safely in bear populated areas of Southcentral or Southeast Alaska.

Tell us about your knowledge of the cultural history of Southcentral or Southeast Alaska. The knowledge may be general to a region and/or specific to a place. Provide details about how you gained this knowledge, such as through cultural stories, learning from elders or other local community members, etc.

Tell us about your knowledge of trails and/or recreation sites in the area(s) of Southcentral or Southeast Alaska that you have lived in. Include information such as where the trailhead or site is, what you like about the trail or site, and any improvements you have seen that need to be made.

Tell us what you know about the fish and/or wildlife species in Southcentral or Southeast Alaska. How did you gain this knowledge? Include the name of the species, their typical habitat, and any other information that help explains your knowledge.

What information you would share with visitors to Southcentral or Southeast Alaska regarding the climate and how they can prepare when planning a trip, such as typical weather conditions for different seasons and appropriate clothing or items to bring for the activities planned in their trip.

Please describe any experience you have leading the planning efforts for trips to local forest areas in Southcentral or Southeast Alaska. Include information about transportation planning, field logistics, gear, safety measures, etc.

Describe your experience teaching and/or leading others how to safely hike and navigate and orient themselves in the local terrain. Describe specifics of the activity you were involved in when providing the instruction, such as hiking, camping, etc. for single or multi-day trips; the name of the location where the activity took place; and what navigational tools you provided instruction on, i.e. compass, maps, etc.
