1. This position has an individual occupational requirement. In order to qualify, you must meet one of the below:

1.) Degree: major in biological science that included:
  • At least 6 semester hours in aquatic subjects such as limnology, ichthyology, fishery biology, aquatic botany, aquatic fauna, oceanography, fish culture, or related courses in the field of fishery biology; and
  • At least 12 semester hours in the animal sciences in such subjects as general zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, entomology, parasitology, ecology, cellular biology, genetics, or research in these fields. (Excess course work in aquatic subjects may be used to meet this requirement when appropriate.)

2.) Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours), of which a minimum of 6 semester hours were in aquatic subjects and 12 semester hours were in the animal sciences, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

2. For GS-09: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:
  1. Coordinating and consulting with local Tribal, State, special interest groups and other federal agencies concerned with the proper protection and conservation of aquatic and fish habitats.
  2. Study and report on fish habitat requirements and the effects of environmental contaminants, parasites, and diseases on fish and other aquatic species.
  3. Monitoring on-going aquatic habitat development projects and the implementation of new projects.
  4. Provides basic input to interdisciplinary reports, environmental assessments, and protective stipulations for Special Status Species aquatic life.
  5. Participates in monitoring and surveying sensitive aquatic species and their habitats and evaluates and reports any changes in the habitat status.
  6. Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of resource management plans.

A master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D.

A combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level)

3. For GS-11: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:
  1. Protection and conservation of aquatic and fish habitats. 
  2. Provide guidance and quality control on projects and products.
  3. Coordination issues with local interest groups, Tribal Councils, and other federal agencies on matters pertaining to the impact of the application of biological decisions, habitat conservation, and laws and regulations.
  4. Responsible for writing and reviewing the aquatic biological input to Environmental Assessments, Environmental Impact Statements, Section 7 Biological Assessments, development of protective stipulations, and Resource Management Plans.
  5. Responsible for identification of impacts to fish habitat and aquatic special status species by other resource activities.
  6. Evaluates inventory and monitoring data to determine habitat and population trends and impacts, then formulates strategies designed to recover or mitigate and monitor impacts.
  7. Conducts surveys and monitors existing aquatic management habitat projects and designs, implements them, and monitors new habitat projects for the assigned area.
  8. Point of contact for input to the aquatic resources portion of the annual work plan.
  9. Contract aquatic projects or serve as a Project Officer where projects fall under an agreement.

Successfully completed three (3) years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or have received a Ph.D. or equivalent graduate degree in biological science or directly related coursework.

A combination of graduate level education (beyond 18 semester hours) and specialized experience that is directly related to this position that together meets the qualification requirements for this position
