Minimum Basic Requirements

1. From the descriptions below, select the one response that best describes how your background meets the basic requirements for a Wildland Firefighter (Fuels), GS-0456-11 position.

A. FOR INTERNAL TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT APPLICANTS- I possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 grade level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-9 must include: Assist in the development, reviewing and evaluating fire management plans for ecological soundness, or consistency with land management goals and/or potentially adverse impacts to cultural and natural resources; conducting field inspections before and after prescribed or wildfires to determine if resource objectives were achieved and/or to evaluate the effectiveness of actions taken; and, analyzing the ecological role of fire and its use and/or exclusion, and smoke management; professional forest or range inventory methods and procedures (e.g., Brown's planar intercepts for dead and down fuels; live fuel loading assessments); analysis of fuel loadings and assist in the determination of appropriate fuel treatment methods (i.e. prescribed fire, mechanical, chemical, or biological treatments); and evaluation of prescribed burn plans or fire management plans to ensure fire containment is possible and identification of appropriate suppression contingencies if fire containment is not obtained.

B. FOR OUTSIDE/NON-FEDERAL GOVERNMENT APPLICANTS - I possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-10 grade level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience at the GS-10 must include: Developing, reviewing and evaluating fire management plans for ecological soundness, or consistency with land management goals and/or potentially adverse impacts to cultural and natural resources; lead field inspections before and after prescribed or wildfires to determine if resource objectives were achieved and/or to evaluate the effectiveness of actions taken; and, analyzing the ecological role of fire and its use and/or exclusion, and smoke management; professional forest or range inventory methods and procedures (e.g., Brown's planar intercepts for dead and down fuels; live fuel loading assessments); analysis of fuel loadings and determination of appropriate fuel treatment methods (i.e. prescribed fire, mechanical, chemical, or biological treatments); land use planning and environmental compliance and evaluation of prescribed burn plans or fire management plans to ensure fire containment is possible and identification of appropriate suppression contingencies if fire containment is not obtained.

Wildland Firefighting Experience (Selective Factor)

2. Applicants for this secondary administrative fire fighter position under the provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d), must possess knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of wildland firefighting as demonstrated by direct wildland firefighting experience. To receive credit, you must provide a written description of your experience in wildland firefighting. Education without hands-on wildland firefighting experience does not meet this requirement. A. I have significant wildland firefighting experience. Wildland firefighting experience is defined as on-the-line wildland firefighting experience gained through containment, control, suppression, or use of wildland fire. This experience can be met by serving on a temporary, seasonal, or equivalent private sector fire position. Wildland fire is defined as any non-structure fire that occurs in the wildland and is categorized into two distinct types: Wildfires, which is any unplanned ignitions or prescribed fires that are declared wildfires; and Prescribed Fires which are planned ignitions. Prescribed fire experience must be supplemented by fire suppression experience in order to be creditable as previous wildland firefighting experience. This experience has been documented in my work history/experience blocks on my resume.

B. I do not possess the wildland firefighting experience described above.

Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Prescribed Fire and Fuels Specialist (Primary Core Requirement)

3. In addition to the specialized experience described above, selectees for this position must possess by the closing date of this announcement NWCG certification as Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2).
