  • Chief Data Office (CDO): The Chief Data Officer (CDO) drives the GAO's mission to provide reliable information and insights to Congress, thereby enhancing governmental accountability and transparency. Intern will work alongside CDO assisting on key priorities that may include publishing the data strategy, updating processes and policies to support key enterprise data management standards, establishing data governance and meta-data management frameworks, and supporting the business in delivering value through its critical data assets.
  • Chief Administrative Office (CAO) Business Process Analytics: Interns will work on internal surveys and evaluations and will participate in the design, implementation and analysis of these programs. Interns should have at minimum, intermediate experience or training with data analysis software (Excel, Python, R, Tableau, etc.) and quantitative research methods (surveys/polls/questionnaires, data collection, and statistics). Experience with Qualtrics software survey platform is also desired.
  • Chief Administrative Office (CAO) Collaboration Assessment Resolution and Education: Intern will learn how to conduct risk assessments in order to triage potential insider threats. Intern will assist the GAO Insider Threat Program in identifying agency-wide vulnerabilities that could be exploited by insider threats, and developing mitigation strategies. Intern will collect and analyze data, develop data-based findings and conclusions.
  • Congressional Relations (CR): Fosters and maintains liaisons with congressional committees, Members of Congress, and congressional staff
  • Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (FASAB): Interns will perform research and technical activities in support of the Board and its staff. Duties will include reviewing and analyzing federal financial report disclosures and/or supporting the development of implementation guidance on leases, land, public-private partnerships, and software technology. Experience with automation tools used for data gathering and analysis is a plus.
  • Financial Management and Business Operations (FMBO): Responsible for maintaining, organizing, interpreting, and reviewing accounting, procurement, and other financial documents and data for record management purposes; formulation of budget policy and tracking of budget execution; analyzing and reviewing data to ensure consistency; conducting analysis of GAO/FMBO' s best practices and recommendations.
  • Human Capital Office (HCO): Perform a range of analytical and technical work assignments to support GAO's human resources functions such as researching human capital trends and leading practices, processing personnel and payroll actions, developing recruitment strategies and communications materials, and enhancing organizational diversity and inclusion program.
  • Infrastructure Operations (IO): Plans and executes operations, processes, and programs in the subject areas of real estate; facility management; security and emergency management; and records management and privacy. Develops strategies and integrates action plans to measure program accomplishments, results, and effectiveness, especially as it relates to the modernization and optimization of GAO real property and the implementation of post-pandemic work practices. Creates and provides briefings and reports for the Senior Leadership on the status of programs and operations
  • Learning Center (LC): Intern will work alongside Learning Center staff to design, devel­op, and administer the policies, systems, and learning resources that support career-long growth. The Learning Center offers and facilitates required and elective courses, mentoring, coach­ing, organizational development and team building, job-aids, learning groups, and communities of prac­tice.
  • Office of the General Counsel (OGC) Appropriations Law Support Branch: The intern will work alongside the paralegals to carry out GAO's responsibilities under the CRA in maintaining a searchable database, known as the Federal Rules Database, which contains certain basic information on all major and non-major rules received by GAO since 1996. Provide overall administrative support to the manager with the distribution of GAO legal decisions, the Federal Vacancies Act work, and scheduling and keeping track of the Appropriations Law courses.
  • Office of the Inspector General (OIG) - Depending on the intern's background/education/interest, the intern will work with various areas of the OIG on audits, inspections and evaluations, investigations, and legal issues. For example, the intern may work with federal agents on the development of investigations, including assisting in interviews and analysis of documentary and email evidence. An intern interested in legal work would have the opportunity to analyze legal issues. The intern may be asked to assist with conducting research and drafting memos, policies, reports, and other correspondence. The intern will interact with staff throughout the OIG, including the Inspector General and Deputy Inspector General. Knowledge of tools for data analysis such as Excel spreadsheets and an interest in investigations, audits, inspections and evaluations, or legal issues are beneficial for this position.
  • Public Affairs (PA): Help with maintaining and improving the agency's external communication with the press and the public. Interns will work alongside staff supporting GAO's blog, podcast, video, and social media; web and email communications; media relations and other external communications.
  • Strategic Planning and External Liaison (SPEL): Intern will help develop tools and methods to advance one or more of our programs: Strategic Planning and Foresight, International Relations, and Domestic Relations. Intern will also help promote dialogue within the accountability community, improve event coordination and planning tools, provide support to the Executive Office, and support the Managing Director's long-term agenda.
