BASIC REQUIREMENTS. To qualify for an appointment as a Lead Medical Supply Technician (MST) - Sterile Processing (SP) at the VHA, all applicants must meet the following criteria: (limit characters)

3. Basic Experience and/or Education. Please read each experience and education option carefully. When answering the questionnaire, remember that your experience and education are subject to verification by investigation.

Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or  

Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or

Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

Grandfathering Provision. All MSTs that are employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the title, series, and grade held, that are part of the basic requirements of the occupation.

GRADE LEVEL REQUIREMENTS - To qualify for an appointment as a Lead MST (Sterile Processing) at the VHA, all applicants must meet the following two criteria: (limit characters)

4. GS-07 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)

One year of specialized experience at the next lower grade (GS-6) level.

Specialized experience includes but not limited to the following:
  • Knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings
  • Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross-contamination
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, medical conditions, and procedures
  • Knowledge of sterility principles in regard to instrumentation
  • Ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures

5. GS-7 Grade Level Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

In addition to the GS-6 grade level specialized experience, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

1. Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
2. Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules, and regulations.
3. Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
4. Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
5. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.

SF-50 for Federal Employees - If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date (shown in box 4) within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess the 1 year specialized experience, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50. The yearly Cost of Living Adjustment SF-50, issued in January, does not prove a full year of specialized experience.  Monetary or time off award SF-50's do not provide sufficient information and will not be accepted. Examples of appropriate SF-50's include:
  • Within grade increases at the highest grade held; or
  • Promotions with an effective date more than one year old; or
  • SF-50's at the highest grade held with an effective date more than one year old
