To qualify for this position, you must meet the Basic Requirements as well as any additional grade-level qualification requirements. 

Grandfather Provision. A Clinical Laboratory Scientist employed in VHA on the effective date of the qualification standard (12/03/2024) who did not meet all the basic requirements in this standard may not be promoted beyond the full performance level (GS-0644-11) or be newly placed in supervisory or managerial positions until meeting the full qualification requirements.

5. GS-12 Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Ancillary Testing Coordinator) Experience:

Do you possess one (1) year of creditable experience equivalent to the full performance level (GS-11), which is directly related to the position to be filled?


For all GS-12 assignments above the Full Performance Level (GS-11), the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety and be performed by the CLS at least 25% of the time.

NOTE:  One (1) year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) is required for all GS-12 assignments.

6. GS-12 Clinical Laboratory Scientist (Ancillary Testing Coordinator) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of medical technology concepts, principles, practices, and methodologies sufficient to perform full oversight and guidance for testing programs outside of the laboratory.
  • Knowledge of mathematics and statistics as related to quality control, quality assurance, proficiency testing, inspection and accreditation, and continuous quality improvement.
  • Knowledge of Federal, state, and VHA laws, regulations, reference standards, and certifying or accrediting agency requirements to carry out work in each ancillary testing site.
  • Knowledge of laboratory information technology systems and interconnectivity.
  • Skill in applying new scientific/technological developments and theories to laboratory testing.
  • Ability to evaluate, interpret, and teach others to use quality control procedures and implement corrective actions.
