BASIC REQUIREMENTS. To qualify for this position, you must meet the Basic Requirements below as well as any additional grade-level qualification requirements.*

  3. Registration.
    1. All applicants must hold the RDN credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing agency of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
    2. Exception for Dietitians who do not possess the RDN credential.
      1. Non-credentialed Dietitians who meet the basic qualification requirements and have fulfilled the requirements below, but do not possess the RDN credential, may be given a temporary full-time appointment not to exceed one year under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c)(2).
        1. Non-credentialed Dietitians must have fulfilled each of the following:
          1. Earned a bachelor's or higher degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college, university or foreign equivalent.
          2. Completed an ACEND® accredited experiential or supervised practice program and provide a verification statement from the program that conveys eligibility to take the CDR registration exam as a prospective RDN.
          3. Non-credentialed Dietitians may only be appointed at the GS-07 or GS-09 grade level and may not be promoted/converted until they obtain their RDN credential.
          4. Non-credentialed Dietitians must provide care under the supervision of a RDN at or above the full performance level.
          5. Temporary appointments of non-credentialed Dietitian will not be extended beyond one year or converted to a new temporary appointment.
    3. Failure to Obtain Registration. In all cases, Dietitians must actively pursue meeting registration requirements starting from their appointment date. Failure to obtain registration within one year from the date of appointment will result in removal from the Dietitian, GS-0630 occupation and may result in termination of employment.
    4. Loss of Credential. Officials must immediately relieve employees who fail to maintain the required registration/certification of duties and responsibilities associated with the occupation and/or assignment, which may also result in separation from employment.
    5. Grandfathering Provision. Employees in VHA in this occupation, under a permanent, appropriate and legal placement on the effective date of the qualification standard, are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade and/or assignment held, including positive education and registration/certification, where applicable.

Experience/Education Requirement: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, Do you possess at least 1 year of experience as a registered dietitian equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-7),OR education equivalent Masters degree from a regionally accredited university or college in the field of dietetics or closely related field?

Experience Includes: Performing increasingly complex tasks under supervision. Conduct nutrition assessments using the NCP. Develop skills in applying evidence-based nutrition practice guidelines, interpreting research and utilizing whole health principles. Utilize virtual care technology to improve access to care. Maintain accurate record keeping of daily activities. Working in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, outpatient centers, residential treatment programs and patient homes.

In addition to the experience above, can you demonstrate the following KSAs?
  • Knowledge of various accrediting and regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of virtual technology to provide nutrition care.

Experience includes: independently planning, developing and directing all nutrition care activities (e.g., food service and/or clinical nutrition). Serving as important member of the interdisciplinary team of care providers and focus on offering exceptional nutrition care and guidance to optimize health. Working in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, outpatient centers, residential treatment programs and patient homes. Using evidence-based approaches to develop menus, counsel patients and provide nutrition care.

In addition to the experience above, can you demonstrate the following KSAs?
  • Knowledge of best practices in the dietetics profession and in scientific literature, including knowledge of research methods, study design, data collection, interpretation of findings, and translation of results into nutrition practice;
  • Ability to comply with various accrediting, regulatory, and agency authorities;
  • Ability to develop and maintain a system of internal reviews and direct quality control and performance improvement studies;
