Thank you for your interest in the Addiction Therapist (Bachelor's Prepared). Please select the appropriate answer to each of the following questions based on your current level of education and/or experience that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position. When answering the questionnaire, remember that your experience and/or education are subject to verification by investigation. You may be asked to provide specific examples or documentation of experience or education as proof to support your answers, or you may be required to verify a response by a practical demonstration of your claimed ability to perform a task. Addiction Therapist (Bachelor's Prepared) (AT). The AT level is designated for those who are bachelor's prepared ATs and hold the state's highest-level recognition for practice as bachelor's prepared (i.e., license or certification) in the field of Alcohol and Drug Treatment. Although some states may recognize bachelor's prepared as an independent provider VHA only recognizes bachelor's prepared ATs as a dependent provider. ATs in this level assignment are dependent providers and perform work under guidance of Addiction Therapists (Licensed Master's) in designated assignments. Licensure and Certification. The state may title the highest-level of recognition as either "Licensed" or "certification"; however, when "license, licensure or non-licensed" reference is made throughout the appendix it is implied and intended for both certification and license granted by a state. An individual in an AT or LMAT position must hold the state's highest-level of recognition for the specified level/position being filled in the field of Alcohol and Drug Treatment. 2. Education:

You must hold a bachelor's degree in drug and alcohol studies or a related behavioral health field from an accredited college or university. In some jurisdictions, individuals may not be required to hold a bachelor's degree to be licensed in Alcohol and Drug Treatment. VHA will not waive education requirements even if the candidate has a license that does not require a bachelor's degree.

3. Licensure Requirements: Persons appointed or reassigned to an AT position in the GS-0101 series must:

(a) Hold a full, current and unrestricted state license in the field of Alcohol and Drug Treatment; AND
(b) Complete one of the following:
International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certification (CASAC); or
National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC), Level 1.

GRADE REQUIREMENTS AND DETERMINATIONS. In addition to the basic requirements outlined in paragraph 3 of Appendix G76 and paragraph 1 of this subappendix, the following criteria must be met when determining the qualification of candidates for the specified assignment (limit characters)

4. GS-5 Grade Determination: Are you licensed with less than one year of experience?

5. GS-7 Grade Determination: In addition to the basic requirements, you must have at least one year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Duties include: addition screening assessments, orientation, education, treatment planning and counseling; OR

Possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a major field of study in a drug and alcohol studies or a related behavioral health field with exemplary academic record as demonstrated by:

(a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (B or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on four years of education or as computed based on courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum; OR
(b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 (B+ or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final two years of the curriculum; OR
(c) Class Standing: Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university or major subdivision based on completed courses.

In addition to the experience/education requirements, you must demonstrate the following KSAs:

(a) Knowledge of principles, concepts and methods of counseling and therapies used in treatment of individuals with SUDs.
(b) Knowledge of appropriate documentation of substance use history and treatment.
(c) Ability to identify patients who are in psychological distress.

6. GS-9 GRADE DETERMINATION: In addition to the basic requirements, you must have at least one year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Duties include: assist with addiction screening, assessments, orientation, education, treatment planning and counseling. Identify patients experiencing psychological distress and engage licensed clinicians as necessary to provide crisis intervention.

You must also demonstrate the following KSAs:

a) Knowledge of coexisting medical or other mental health disorders as interrelated to SUDs.
(b) Ability to complete assessments of substance use disorders, treatment planning and continued care planning.
(c) Ability to develop and maintain effective working or therapeutic relationships with multidisciplinary staff, Veterans and their families, from various backgrounds and community resources to ensure appropriate referrals.
