2. Education Requirement -
Master's degree or its equivalent in audiology or hearing science from an accredited college or university is required.

NOTE: Accreditation organization and an audiology program recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Audiology Education (ACAE) and/or the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

3. Licensure -
GS-12 Level Candidates:
  • must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
GS-9 and GS-11 Non-licensed applicants who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements:
  • Non-licensed audiologists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements for licensure may be given a temporary appointment as a graduate audiologist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405(c). Failure to obtain licensure during appointment as a graduate audiologist is justification for termination of the temporary appointment. Individuals appointed as graduate audiologists may not be promoted to the GS-12 level without being fully licensed. This may result in termination of employment.

EXPERIENCE:

4. Experience - (Developmental Level) GS-11
Education and Experience: Completion of 1 year of professional experience as an audiologist equivalent to the next lower level; or 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a doctoral degree; or doctoral degree in audiology, hearing science, or a directly related field.

Must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  1. Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice
  2. Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  3. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, acoustics, applied acoustics, communication, psychoacoustics, and auditory/vestibular pathophysiology
  4. Knowledge of principles and techniques in the assessment and treatment of auditory and balance disorders
  5. Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice
  6. Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care professionals

5. Experience - (Full Performance level) GS-12:
Education and Experience: In addition to the requirements at the GS-11 level, completion of 1 year of professional experience comparable to the next lower level and possession of a full, current and unrestricted license to practice audiology.

Must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  1. Ability to develop coherent treatment strategies
  2. Knowledge of clinical services, and the ability to perform them independently
  3. Ability to conduct assessments and provide treatment interventions
  4. Ability to provide consultation to other health care professionals
  5. Knowledge of contemporary audiology practice
  6. Ability to perform functions associated with contemporary audiology scope of practice.
