Eligibilities

4. Do you meet one of the following Competitive Merit Promotion Eligibility?
  1. Current Federal employee on a career or career-conditional appointment in the competitive service and holds, or have held, a career or career-conditional position at a lower band/grade level of the position being announced.  -OR-
  2. Current GAO employees, if you are a current employee to meet competitive service, you would need to have completed one year of continuous service at GAO under a non-Temporary appointment and were appointment on or after October 1, 1980 (service prior to this date was in the competitive service).
To verify your eligibility, you must submit a copy of your latest SF-50 Notification of Personnel Action form reflecting your competitive status. 
Your SF-50(s) must show Tenure (Block 24) AND Position Occupied (Block 34). Your SF-50 must be submitted with your application.

5. Are you a Former Peace Corps and AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteers and has served (1) one year of Peace Corp or AmeriCorps Vista Volunteer Service?
Your non-competitive eligibility lasts for one year after completing your Peace Corps or AmeriCorps Volunteer service. 
However, at GAO's discretion, if you meet the below criteria, an extension may be granted to the one-year completion period.
  1. enter military service; or
  2. study at an accredited college or university; or
  3. engage in another activity, which in GAO's view, warrants an extension.
Your non-competitive eligibility does not entitle you to a job within the federal government. You must still apply and meet qualification standards and additional requirements, such as a background investigation.

7. Do you meet the following Reinstatement eligibility?
  • A former permanent federal civilian employee with competitive status who has acquired career-conditional tenure and within 3 years of the date of separation; OR
  • A military preference eligible who served under career or career-conditional appointment in the competitive service or excepted or excepted-conditional appointment in the expected service for any period of time, OR
  • A former permanent federal civilian employee with competitive service career tenure; OR
  • A former GAO employee with expected tenure or former GAO employee who has acquired competitive status. To acquire competitive status you would need to have (1) completed one year of continuous service at GAO under a non-Temporary appointment and (2) been appointed on or after October 1, 1980 (service prior to this date was in the competitive service) and at the same band level as this position or higher.
