SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Do you possess 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to this Health Technician position to be filled? Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
Specialized experience for this position includes assisting the interdisciplinary team in the care and treatment of patients; instructing, guiding, and assisting patients as needed in activities of daily living; explaining procedures and guidelines, maintains therapeutic boundaries; performing a range of diagnostic support duties that include but are not limited to monitoring temperatures, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation measurements, measuring height and weight, and patient transfers; collecting, recording, and reporting deviations in vital signs/withdrawal symptoms, collecting and labeling specimens.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Have you successfully completed one-half year (9 semester hours) of graduate level education that is directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled? One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Gathers pertinent data regarding presenting complaints from patients/family members and reports to the Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).

Utilizes oxygen equipment and demonstrates ability to identify the correct oxygen delivery device for emergency situations.

Explains Electrocardiograph (ECG) procedures to Veterans prior to performing procedure.

Initiates and assists with basic life support (BLS) as needed.

Performs finger stick blood glucose testing and reports, and documents results in the medical record according to Laboratory/Medical Center policies and procedures.

Reports all values immediately to the physician and/or registered nurse.

Assists with answering phones and placing calls/pages as needed.
17.
Greets and assists arriving patients/family/visitors and directs them to the appropriate treatment area.
18.
Interacts in a courteous/respectful manner with interdisciplinary healthcare team, patients, families, and visitors.
19.
Safeguards patient records during visit in accordance with the Privacy Act and Medical Center policies.
20.
Assist staff with the identification and notification of supply needs to Logistics, to ensure supplies are adequately stocked in the Specialty Clinic for which they are assigned.
