1. Individual Occupational Requirements: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. 3. Performs skilled venipuncture in accordance with facility and laboratory policies and procedures.

4. Highly experienced in phlebotomy procedures and knowledgeable of the various types and sizes of tubes used for collection, how much blood is required for each test, types of tests, what color of tube needs to be drawn and what anticoagulants are necessary to assure accurate test results.

5. Perform a wide variety of blood collection in a responsible nature requiring enhanced knowledge of clinical science to understand the multiplicity of tests and specimen requirements, the mechanics of venipuncture and patient preparation.

6. Demonstrate versatility of skill in rapidly proceeding from one patient to another to perform multiple and simultaneous collections using accurate patient and specimen identification procedures in an independent or team environment.

12. Use initiative in directing the activities of the phlebotomy area and provide patient education on standards for specimen collection and works independently without specific instruction.

13. Responsible for specialized preparation of specimens for transport to the main laboratory for appropriate processing.

14. Responsible for cleaning disinfecting and sterilization of equipment and ancillary equipment according to Medical Center Policies and Procedures.

16. Performs all clerical duties required of the position, including work lists, logs, and pending lists. Maintains record of procedures performed in the phlebotomy area. The technician is responsible to manage turn-around times of pre-analytical testing and patient wait times.

17. Maintains the laboratory facilities and equipment and controls supplies. Sets up equipment for all phlebotomy procedures, making sure that all phlebotomy and ancillary equipment is functioning to standard.

18. Determines compliance with safety requirements, establishes inventory and equipment maintenance requirements and maintains appropriate inventories and maintenance schedules. Maintains laboratory stock and orders materials as needed.
